18.2.06 || portrait spree
some fan art on the boosh forum inspired me to try a sketch of hippy-naboo on thursday. the more-or-less successful outcome of it then drove me into a hyper portrait spree, sketching any photos i could find, and i had to force myself to stop at half two in the morning. i realised that the secret to doing portraits is not to do what art teaches you - drawing the shape of the face, and then trying to work out the proportions of the features. is it 2:1? 5:2? bugger that and just work up from the jaw. if only the ability had lasted, but alas it was washed away with the remnants of breakfast. anyhoo, here are the results: the original hippy-naboo, a lopsided funk-howard, the dublin bushman and lloyd with a sprig of lloyd hair.

there are also a couple of pencil ones which don't scan.

picture yourself as a carefree, rock-slinging, spike-haired south-sider.

it's ok - take a minute or two.

it's a bright saturday. the household items/occupants you subject to the bonier parts of your anatomy on duller days holding little appeal, you find today's joy in skimming along your tarmac terrain on a bike. flanking you are the similar-minded individuals that impose on you and themselves all the peer pressure comprising your lifestyle.

tracing the interplay of shadows, so glorious compared to the uninspiring landscape features casting them, you find yourself at the glasgow science centre: a place with much space for cycling and extra-large windows posing a challenge to your destructive handcraft. yet as you approach, there appear spots of appealing colour and motion. a crowd in eccentric dress occupies your precious ground, brandishing clubs, balls, rings, poi and diablo. those for whom, in their singular presence, you would let loose a pointed chorus of circus song or a yet more pointed assortment of projectiles seem to have surprising connections to others of their sort. here, en masse and impervious to jeering, they transform oddly into an almost estimable spectacle.

this is the scottish juggling convention, where one with a persuasion for the gravity-defying arts may truly feel united, understood and in one's element. not only is it a joy to juggle in your variety of ways along with everyone, admiring the sunlight and the impossible acts of select masters, but there are workshops - opportunities for furthering your skills and delving into hitherto unattempted branches of the juggling class. games, socialising and learning stretching on for a whole day and two halves, on into the wee hours for the enduring and the dedicated.

and if these attractions were somehow insufficient to draw forth your £20 and compel you to attend, surely a performance staged by the best from all over the world seals the deal. starting with the astounding super-human feats of two german 16-year-old freestyle unicyclists, it moves through an assortment crowd-pleasing number-jugglers to those who seek to impress their juggling-savvy audience with five-ball multiplexed mill's mess and three-ball one-handed cascade. topping it off is the fast-paced, incomparable japanese diabloer, tempei, who carries out bewildering swoops and spins of complete precision with his string.

basically, a great weekend of inspiring and impressive sights, greatly enjoyable activities and fun social events such as haggis juggling world record attempt (the 4-haggis record was beaten) and the ceilidh. plus i got an assortment of shiny new equipment.
