i have realised now that king crimson is definitely my favourite band. for a start, as robert fripp himself describes it, it's more of a concept than a band. it may sound pretentious, but - with personnel turmoil out of which emerges only fripp and a consistent feel continued through its many eras, deftly traversing the treachery of the eighties right through to the present day - i would say it is quite true.
the line-ups appearing throughout its history have always made for a unique sound on their albums. instrumentation has ranged from every popular reed instrument to the tinkling piano as conjured beneath keith tippet's cascading fingers, the violin grandmastery of improvisational genius david cross, and the bewildering assortment of percussion and miscelany toyed with by madman jamie muir. the latter two have made particularly fantastic contributions, on the peerless larks' tongues in aspic.
however, a surprisngly important factor, i just discovered, is that they never look down their noses. in the musical sense, that is. rising to heights of jazz, avant-garde and cacophony, they still nurture the more simplistic side. fearlessly they dip into simple harmonies, plain 4/4 structures, lone guitar, and even power chord thrashing. and just about all of it works. it's this span of all aspects of their genre that makes them truly respectable, and i'm sure a joy to work with.
that settled, a spree is in order to overload myself with some kc. thank you, serendipitously-obtained £40 cheque!
